8th meeting of the Kazakh – Hungarian Intergovernmental Commission

Budapest, January 27, 2023 – under the co-chairmanship of the Minister of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Alibek Kuantyrov and the Minister of Finance of Hungary Mihály Varga, the 8th meeting of the Kazakh-Hungarian Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) on Economic Cooperation was held, and was attended by representatives of government bodies, development institutions and academic circles of two countries.

During the meeting, the parties discussed issues of enhancing cooperation in a wide range of fields, and also expressed mutual readiness to further expand bilateral cooperation.

As an outcome of the meeting, the parties signed the Protocol of the 8th meeting of the IGC, as well as a number of Memorandums of Understanding and Cooperation in the fields of energy, finance, education and business.

Within the framework of the visit the Kazakh minister held a number of bilateral meetings with representatives of the Hungarian government and business sector.

In this regard, at a meeting with Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, the prospects for cooperation in nuclear energy, the IT sector, energy security and education were discussed.

The parties exchanged views on the measures taken to develop the economies of the two countries in the current geopolitical conditions. The head of the Ministry of National Economy highlighted the ongoing work to diversify exports and achieve carbon neutrality.

During the meeting of Alibek Kuantyrov with Gergely Fábián, the State Secretary for Industrial Policy and Technology of the Ministry of Economic Development of Hungary, the parties exchanged views on economic reforms, tariff policy and entrepreneurship development.

Within the framework of the IGC, a regular meeting of the Kazakh-Hungarian Business Council was organized, at which the Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan noted that there is a vast potential for cooperation between the two countries in the field of finance, including within the framework of the Astana International Finance Center, agriculture, energy, cargo and passenger air transportation, IT, ecology and humanitarian field.

As part of the visit, the Kazakh delegation visited the Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and the NPP’s Maintenance Training Center.

Also, the Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan held a meeting with Gábor Sági, the CEO of “Globalia Ltd.”, during which the parties discussed the implementation of projects aimed at the development of green energy in Kazakhstan.

At the meeting of the minister with students from Kazakhstan studying in the leading universities of Hungary, the discussion touched upon possibilities of expanding international scientific and educational cooperation, as well as internships in Kazakh and Hungarian companies.
